The incident happened around 7 a.m. Monday while a 16-year-old girl was waiting for a bus, city leaders said. The teen, a student at Frontier International Academy, was abducted at gunpoint, according to Abdulmalik Algahaim, president of the Hamtramck Public Schools Board of Education.

Police said the victim and the suspect did not know each other.

Several other students witnessed the crime and contacted police while monitoring the victim’s location through social media and cellphone information, Algahaim said.

“Their awareness, quick reactions, and willingness to share critical information played a vital role in helping officers track the student’s location and respond without delay,” Algahaim said in a Facebook post. “Their courage and cooperation reflect the strength and unity of our youth when faced with danger.”

Police quickly located the suspect’s vehicle and made an arrest. Authorities said the victim is safe.

Officials have not yet indicated what charges the suspect will face. In Michigan, kidnapping is punishable by up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine.
