General Motors will donate $50M to STEAM in Michigan

General Motors Co. will donate $50 million over the next five years to Michigan science, technology, engineering, arts and math education programs, President Mark Reuss told The Detroit News.

The goal is to improve results in Michigan school systems, especially as pipelines to STEAM jobs at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Reuss said.

“We want to draw and invest in that education and opportunity in Michigan,” he said.

Grants will be available by application, but Reuss said he hopes money will go to Detroit schools.

“We are headquartered in Detroit. The Tech Center is very close to Detroit. I would love to see a material difference in the Detroit public school system,” Reuss said. “I think we all would. The city in its rebound is spectacular, but it’s fragile. And so when we see younger folks moving into the Detroit area with great jobs, we want them to stay, and if the education system isn’t something that they can count on, then that’s problematic.”
