I’m fortunate that my job involves hands-on work with a lot of the stories we publish. Editors at much large metropolitan newspapers don’t get to do as much editing. On the other hand, it means sometimes the newsweek can be so busy it feels like a blur.
That was certainly the case last week. In the span of five days, Michigan State University announced its new athletic director, Dan Bartholomae, a high-profile trial stemming from the death of a man in East Lansing last year wrapped up, a popular Holt restaurant burned and Lansing recorded its fifth homicide of the year. Late Friday evening, we published a story identifying the developer behind efforts to put a data center near Mason.
And throughout the week sports reporter Brian Calloway was publishing stories ahead of the high school football season and reporter Karly Graham was prepping a couple stories on MSU students returning to campus. We are rolling out a number of new features this year, including pre-season ranking for high school football. Watch for that story soon.
One of the more popular stories we published this week was a column by retired State Journal columnist John Schneider on the controversial new deer hunting rules in Michigan. If you hunt below M-57, in what used to be the shotgun zone, give it a read.
It was a busy week as the news cycle ramps up now that MSU and K-12 students are back and high school and college football kicks off over the next couple weeks.
