Pelchat, 43, is vying for the state’s 49th District House seat to represent residents of the City of Brighton and the townships of Brighton and Green Oak in Livingston County, as well as Walled Lake, Wixom, and parts of the City of Novi and Lyon and Commerce townships in Oakland County.

“I have felt a call to return to public service as I have watched how some of our elected representatives are working to undermine our system of government and fair elections,” Pelchat wrote in a March 22 press release.  “I can no longer be silent when I see our way of life and our system of government being undermined. I want to represent the strong democratic values that the people of Michigan are known for.”

Pelchat is a Democrat and the only candidate so far to formally file for the position currently held by Republican Ann Bollin, a former longtime Brighton Township clerk who has served in the House of Representatives since 2019.

Pelchat, an IT technician for South Lyon Community Schools for nearly two decades, was elected mayor of South Lyon in 2017 as a write-in candidate and was reelected twice.

Among his accomplishments as mayor, Pelchat cited working with others to pass an $18.4 million bond to fix roads in South Lyon, move the city’s veterans’ memorial to a more prominent and respectful location and developing the Sidecar social district in South Lyon to support small businesses and enliven the downtown.

If elected in November to the 49th District seat, Pelchat said he would concentrate on “improving public education for children and adults; protecting the environment; protecting women’s rights; improving infrastructure and defending democracy.”
