New Michigan State football head coach Pat Fitzgerald isn’t afraid of setting the bar high for the Spartans this year and moving forward.
“Expectations are to win a Big Ten championship,” Fitzgerald said during Big Ten Media Days on Wednesday. “Full stop.”
Michigan State is looking to get back to finishing the season with a winning record for the first time in five years, but that lack of recent success doesn’t change how Fitzgerald is approaching his first year in East Lansing, Mich. He made it clear during Big Ten Media Days that the Spartans are going to work to contend for a Big Ten championship again.
“We are going to take the green back to being Big Ten Champions, and we are going to use everyone to do it,” Fitzgerald said. “We are going to make Spartan Nation proud.”
There is plenty of work ahead for Fitzgerald and his staff to get Michigan State back to the winning level he’s shooting for. But it’s at least refreshing to hear him speak so highly and confidently about his ability to get them there. Time will tell if Fitzgerald is able to lead Michigan State back to national relevance, but he at least has the confidence to do so — which is the starting point.
