America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence promises to bring big Fourth of July celebrations all around the country, and Chippewa County is joining in on the fun.
From fireworks to picnics to pancakes, there is plenty for people to choose from.
Sault Ste. Marie
Sault Ste. Marie’s Independence Day Parade will begin lining up at 6 p.m. on Davitt Street with the parade getting underway at 7 p.m. The route travels from West 12th Avenue, goes north on Ashmun to Portage and then west to Magazine Street. A Quiet Zone will be enforced at the beginning of the parade, ending at Bella Liquor. There will be prizes for Best Overall, Best Float and Best Walking Group. Following the parade, there will be fireworks at dusk at Brady Park.
Fireworks cruises will also be available from both Original Soo Locks Boat Tours and Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours for a unique view of fireworks from on the water.
Brimley
There’s plenty happening on July 4 in the Brimley area. A 5K Fun Run/Walk is set for 9 a.m. in the Brimley school parking lot. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and costs $20 for adults and $15 for kids. A pancake breakfast will run from 9:30-11 a.m. at the school in support of the Superior Township Fire Department. Kids can decorate their bikes from 9 a.m. to noon at the school in preparation for the parade with free supplies. Vendors and food trucks will be in the school parking lot from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there will also be a smoked food cook-off hosted by the Brimley Robotics Team. Those interested in participating should drop off their dish by noon to the big tent in the parking lot with a $5 entry fee. From 12-3 p.m., people can taste and vote for their favorite dishes for $8, and awards will be given for People’s Choice and Judge’s Favorite. The Pet Pawrade is set for 11:30 a.m. at the tennis court, followed by the main parade at 1 p.m. Lineup begins at noon on the Lake Street loop. After the parade, kids games will be available until 3 p.m. at the tennis court with proceeds going to the robotics club. The Duck Drop will take place at the bridge at 3 p.m. Ducks can be purchased at the Brimley Booster Club booth. The day then wraps up with fireworks at dusk.
Drummond Island
Drummond Island will celebrate America’s 250th birthday with tasty treats, fireworks and more. The day begins with a parade at noon, beginning at the former H&H General Store and ending at the school ballfield. After the parade, there will be games, races and treats, like strawberry shortcake from the Drummond Island Homemakers. There will then be fireworks at dusk at the ballfield.
The Drummond Island Public Library will also have its Fourth of July book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with prices by donation.
DeTour
DeTour Village will have its Independence Day Parade at noon, starting at the corner of Sims Street and Democrat Road and ending at Veterans Park. The Summer Concert Series, featuring Doug Thomas, will take place in the park from 1-4 p.m.
Whitefish Township
The Friends of Whitefish EMS will host a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. on July 4 at the community center in Paradise to raise funds for the purchase of two Lifepak cardiac monitors.
The community center will also have kids games and activities starting at 2 p.m., and a BBQ dinner at 5 p.m. Fireworks are set for dusk.
