Cheboygan

Cheboygan is celebrating America’s 250th birthday with a downtown parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4. The route will go north on Main Street from the Cheboygan County Building to the Eagles Club. Fireworks will then light up the sky at dusk.

Indian River

The Indian River Chamber of Commerce will present a Fourth of July parade at 10 a.m. with a retro theme of “Fourth of July through the Years.” Fireworks will also take place at DeVoe Beach at dusk on July 5.

Mackinaw City

Mackinaw City will celebrate Independence Day with music, fireworks and more. The Mackinaw Woman’s Club kicks things with its annual Strawberry Social from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Municipal Marina Lawn. Fresh strawberries, homemade biscuits and vanilla ice cream will be available for $5 until sold out. There will also be bounce houses from 12-3 p.m. and games like corn hole and egg toss starting at 1:30 p.m. for all ages on the marina lawn with trophies for game winners. The Straits Area Concert Band will perform at 9 p.m. in Conkling Heritage Park and the evening will end with fireworks over the harbor at dusk. Be sure to check out fireworks cruises available from local ferry and boat tour companies for a unique view of the fireworks from the water.

The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum, 131 S. Huron Ave., has multiple days of Fourth-themed fun on their schedule. Veteran Appreciation Day on July 2 offers free admission to veterans. On July 3, the museum will celebrate “The Women Who Built the Mackinaw Day,” which will feature an appearance by Rosie the Riveter and stories about the work of women during wartime. Evening tours of the museum with special tickets will be available on July 4 and visitors can watch fireworks over the Straits from the deck.

Guests can get a historical perspective on the Fourth of July at Colonial Michilimackinac with two events. “The Revolution and Michilimackinac” will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. on July 1 with a free guided tour by Colonial Michilimackinac staff and historians explaining the fort and the lives of former residents. Another America250 event is Fire at Night at 9 p.m. on July 3 when rifle and canon fire will boom. This event is also free, with donations welcome.
