East Lansing High School locked down again after 'swatting' call

EAST LANSING – East Lansing High School was the target of another “swatting” incident May 5, just four days after the school released students halfway through the day in response to another threatening call.

East Lansing High School was placed on lockdown May 5 after the office received a “suspicious phone call,” according to a message from Superintendent Dori Leyko sent to district families.

“At approximately 2:45 this afternoon the high school office received a suspicious phone call,” Leyko wrote in a message to district families. “They immediately locked down the building. With the support of ELPD, we have determined that the call came from out of state. As a precautionary measure, we are canceling all evening activities at the high school. Students are being dismissed and evacuated now.”

According to a message shared through the Ingham County RAVE Alert system, the school received a false threat, known as a “swatting.” The message said a different Michigan school also received a similar call and that there is no risk to the community.

East Lansing police officers completed a sweep of the school, according to the alert.

The elementary school was dismissed at a normal time.

Middle school track practice, which was supposed to be held at the high school, was canceled. All other activities at the other schools in the district will go on as scheduled, Leyko said in the message.

Leyko declined comment when contacted by the State Journal.

On Friday, May 1, officials said someone called a non-emergency line “reporting activity consistent with a potential act of violence” at the high school shortly after 9 a.m., officials said in a statement that day. School officials characterized the incident as a bomb threat, and police attributed it to swatting.
