Connor Seabold is back with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Detroit Tigers traded the 30-year-old right-handed reliever to the Blue Jays on Wednesday, May 27, before the second of three games against the Los Angeles Angels at Comerica Park.
The trade occurred a few days after Seabold had been designated for assignment. He doesn’t have any minor league options remaining, so he will join the Blue Jays in the big leagues.
In return, the Tigers received left-handed reliever Juanmi Vasquez.
Vasquez has spent the entire 2026 season in High-A Vancouver in the Blue Jays organization. He owns a 5.87 ERA with 16 walks and 35 strikeouts across 23 innings in 12 games.
The 22-year-old has been assigned to High-A West Michigan in the Tigers’ organization. He won’t be eligible for the Rule 5 draft until after the 2027 season.
Vasquez registered a 4.94 ERA in his minor league career with the Blue Jays, spanning 145⅔ innings in 68 games (five starts) across parts of five seasons.
As for Seabold, the Tigers signed him to a one-year, $800,000 contract in late March, just three days before Opening Day. He had been released by the Blue Jays at the end of spring training after exercising an opt-out clause in his contract.
Now, Seabold has returned to the Blue Jays.
He appeared in 11 games for the Tigers, posting a 3.45 ERA with five walks and 14 strikeouts across 15⅔ innings.
The Tigers designated Seabold for assignment before Game 2 of Sunday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, opening spots on the 26-man and 40-man rosters for the return of right-hander Troy Melton from the 60-day injured list.
The Blue Jays created a spot for Seabold on their 40-man roster by transferring right-hander José Berríos to the 60-day injured list.
Berríos – the brother-in-law of Tigers utility player Javier Báez – underwent Tommy John surgery May 20 to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2026 season and some of the 2027 season.
Seabold has a 7.28 ERA throughout his five-year MLB career, spanning 134⅔ innings in 51 games (19 starts). The Philadelphia Phillies selected him in the third round – at No. 95 overall – in the 2017 draft out of Cal State Fullerton.
