New York — The Tigers on Tuesday signed right-handed reliever Nick Sandlin to a minor-league contract.
Sandlin, 29, was a workhorse in the Cleveland Guardians bullpen for four seasons, pitching in 129 games between 2023 and 2024.
After spending last season with the Blue Jays, he struggled with the Angels this season, allowing 11 runs in 8.2 innings before he was released.
When he’s right, he’s a tough at-bat with his sidearm release, throwing a slow slider and splitter off 91-92 mph four-seam fastball and sinkers. Over his career, he’s limited right-handed hitters to a .199 average and lefties .189.
Command has been an issue for him recently. His walk rate has climbed from 10% in 2023 to 12.5% this year.
He is expected to be assigned to Triple-A Toledo.
