Detroit police enforcing teen curfew at fireworks

Detroit police didn’t hesitate to enforce an 8 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors in parts of Downtown on fireworks night.

Shortly after 8, police began checking the IDs of a group of young people gathered near Cadillac Square. For those who were 17 and under without a parent or guardian, police secured their hands behind their backs with white plastic zip ties, marched them inside police barriers and put them on Detroit Department of Transportation buses.

Detroit police spokesperson Jasmin Barmore told the Free Press that the teens were being held at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center until their parent or guardian picked them up. The teens and their parent or guardian will be ticketed for violating the curfew, Barmore said.

The City Council approved the change to the ordinance June 16. The ordinance is not new this year, though the early time was set amid the so-called teen takeovers.

The curfew will be enforced from 8 p.m. Monday, June 22, through 6 a.m. Tuesday, June 23. Minors can view the fireworks from any approved public area, but a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult must accompany them, according to a news release. Minors can travel to and from school, work, church or an organized activity.

The curfew applies to the area bound by the Detroit River, Third Street, the Lodge Freeway (M-10), the Fisher Freeway (Interstate 75), the extension of I-75 east of Gratiot Avenue, Gratiot Avenue, Vernor Highway, Chene Street, Atwater Street and the Aretha Franklin Amphitheater.
