A Detroit man is expected to be sentenced later this month in connection with the assault of an 8-year-old Yemeni girl whose throat was slashed while she played in a park.
On Wednesday, Nov. 5, Gary Lansky pleaded guilty but mentally ill in Wayne County Circuit Court to assault with intent to murder and felonious assault. He faces sentencing Nov. 20, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Assault with intent to murder is a felony charge punishable by up to life in prison.
The girl, Saida Mashrah, has said her attacker said nothing when he approached her with a knife at Detroit’s Ryan Park on Oct. 8, 2024. Her mother, Amirah Sharhan, has said the traumatic assault has caused her daughter emotional distress, including nightmares and a fear of strangers. The family filed a lawsuit last month in Wayne County Circuit Court against Lansky.
