CENTREVILLE, MI — A Bronson Township man will serve five to 15 years in prison for a deadly crash that killed a Middlebury, Indiana resident last summer.
St. Joseph Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman on Friday, Jan. 16, handed down the sentence to Todd Gilbert, 56, for the July 1, 2025, traffic death of James “Jimbo” Hansen.
Gilbert pleaded no contest to operating under the influence of alcohol, causing death, plus two counts of operating under the influence, causing injury.
He also received a sentence of 18 months to five years for the injury charges.
Prosecutors dismissed charges of second-degree murder, failing to stop at the scene, lying to police, reckless driving, and meth possession as part of a plea deal.
Michigan State Police said Gilbert crashed his pickup into the back of Hansen’s golf cart at high speed in White Pigeon Township.
Hansen, 61, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His wife, Renee Hansen, suffered serious injuries. Hansen’s granddaughter was also injured.
Gilbert was treated for minor injuries at Beacon Health Three Rivers.
Hansen and his brother owned Jimbo & Company Transport in Middlebury, specializing in RV and cargo transport about five miles south of the crash site.
Gilbert received 134 days’ credit after his arrest in September, 2025.
