Boil water advisory lifted in Novi, Walled Lake

Novi — A boil water advisory has been lifted in much of Novi and Walled Lake after a massive weekend water main break.

The advisory was lifted after a second round of water quality tests confirmed the system is safe for normal use. Great Lakes Water Authority crews continue repair work on the 48-inch transmission main that broke on 14 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.

The break, the second to hit Novi since September, happened early Saturday morning. GLWA officials said it was caused by a power surge after a storm on Friday.

Speaking to the Novi City Council on Monday, Great Lakes Water Authority CEO Suzanne Coffey took the blame Monday the recent main failure and said more needs to be done to keep it from happening again.

Speaking to the Novi City Council on Monday, Suzanne Coffey, GLWA’s CEO, took the blame the recent main failure and said more needs to be done to keep it from happening again. She said the system is running acoustic fiberoptic cable through the pipes to pick up frequencies of wires inside the pipe walls when they break.

The break on Saturday was the second water main rupture to trigger a boil advisory in Walled Lake and Novi in six months. The stretch of the water main west of M-5 ruptured Sept. 28, 2025, which led to an advisory in the two cities as well as Wixom and Commerce Township.
