When the Big Ten expanded to 18 schools and became a bi-coastal conference with the additions of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington from the Pac-12, many of the on-field questions centered around football and, to a lesser extent, men’s basketball.
In the league’s first season since expansion, though, one of the biggest immediate impacts has been seen in baseball.
The 2025 Big Ten baseball tournament gets going this week at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, with newcomers accounting for many of the top contenders for the conference title.
Entering the final weekend of regular-season play, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington, in order, were four of the top five teams in the Big Ten standings, all of which were trailing first-place Iowa. Oregon, at No. 7, and UCLA, at No. 15, are the only teams from the conference in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
For all the Big Ten’s strengths elsewhere, it hasn’t produced a national champion in the southern-dominated sport of baseball since Ohio State in 1966, though if that’s extended to current membership, UCLA won the College World Series in 2013.

When is the 2025 Big Ten baseball tournament?
The 2025 Big Ten baseball tournament will be held at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, the site of the College World Series. It’s the seventh straight season in which the event has been held that the ballpark has served as the host.

Big Ten baseball tournament format
After the conference’s most recent additions, the Big Ten baseball tournament won’t be using a traditional bracket.
Only 12 of the league’s 17 teams — Wisconsin’s the lone Big Ten school that doesn’t sponsor baseball — make the tournament. From there, they’re placed into four three-team pods, with the teams seeded 1-12. Here are how the pools break down:
All the teams in the pool play one another over the course of four days, with the winner of each pool advancing to the semifinals. The Pool A champion will take on the Pool D champion while the Pool B champion will face off against the Pool C champion. The winners of each of those games will meet in the championship.
