Art meets food at Greater Lansing Food Bank's Empty Bowls benefit

BATH TWP. – In addition to taking home artistic, handmade bowls, attendees at this year’s Empty Bowls benefit event at the Greater Lansing Food Bank got a firsthand look at how the organization provides food for the more than 106,500 people in need in its seven-county service area.

For the first time in its history, the 35th annual Empty Bowls benefit was held on Nov. 12 at the Bath Township distribution center.

Attendees got to see how the organization stores, moves and ships out food for those in need as well as learn more about special programs the food bank runs.

“It’s a nice opportunity to engage in the local art scene while also giving back to a mission that’s important to a lot of people,” said Katlyn Cardoso, the Greater Lansing Food Bank senior manager of marketing and communications.

“It’s something that brings a little joy and excitement into the community, especially in a time when we all need a little bit of those moments of joy.”

The event was previously held at local restaurants or other venues.

Guests purchased tickets for $35 for entry to the event that included at tour of the facility and the opportunity to pick out one of the more than 500 handcrafted bowls donated by Greater Lansing Potters’ Guild and Clayworks artists.

Attendees could also purchase additional bowls for $25 each and look at a selection that were auctioned online.

The food bank sold several hundred tickets to the event, which was held in two sessions Nov. 12.

The proceeds from the event go the Greater Lansing Food Bank.
