Fun at the fair
The Cheboygan County Fair is underway, with daily events and activities taking place Aug. 8-15.
Some of the week’s highlights include SUPERX dirt bike racing at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12 in the grandstands, Kids Day on Thursday, Aug. 13 with special games for kids ages 3-12, the King Arthur Youth Baking Contest at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, and of course plenty of carnival rides, games and fair foods.

Learn about Sault streets
The Sault Area Art Center will host “How to Read a Street: An Architectural Survey of the Sault” as part of the Artist Talk Series at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The program will be led by Charles Colbert and will focus on a review of the aesthetic and historical implications of architecture in Sault Ste. Marie from the 19th to the 20th century.
Admission is free, although donations are welcome.

Turn the lights out
The Headlands International Dark Sky Park is issuing a Lights Out Challenge to communities around Northern Michigan.
The challenge asks residents to turn off their lights from 10:30-11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, the night of the new moon, so they can try to get the darkest sky ever recorded at the Headlands.
A presentation about the effects of light pollution will also take place in the Waterfront Event Center at 8 p.m.

Get hopping
Brad Von Blon will lead a Grasshopper Walk in the Offield Famlily Viewlands Working Forest Reserve in Harbor Springs at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13.
Participant will learn about grasshopper species, catch a few and see how to identify them.

Stroll in the garden
The Charlevoix Conservation District is hosting its 6th annual Garden Party from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13.
Guests will enjoy an evening stroll through the district’s native plant garden, learn about the benefits of planting native species, snack on light appetizers and connect with local conservation groups.
Garden party attire is optional. Guests can RSVP at 231-582-6193.
