Celebrate Coast Guard Day
The Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum will celebrate Coast Guard Day on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Coast Guard Day commemorates the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard on Aug. 4, 1790, when it was then known as the Revenue-Marine. The Mackinaw City museum encourages visitors to explore the ship, learn about the Coast Guard’s mission and reflect on their legacy of service.

Learn all about local geology
Dockside Books will host a hands-on presentation called “Discovering Charlevoix’s Natural History” with geologist Steve Tchozeski from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at The Moorings, 222 Bridge St.
Guests will learn the basics of rocks, minerals and Earth’s geology, and get an up-close look at the types of rocks and fossils commonly found in the Charlevoix area.

Find health support
The Chippewa County Health Department will host a Sustaining Generations Health Fair at Avery Square from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6.
The fair, in celebration of National Breastfeeding Month, is a free community event designed to help pregnant and breastfeeding families connect with local resources, gain education and receive support.

Join the pirate invasion
The Boyne City Pirate Fest returns Aug. 6-8.
Festivities get started at 6 p.m. on Thursday with the Pirate Pageants where the Queen and King (ages 16 to 101) and Princess and Prince (ages 5-15) will be crowned in Sunset Park. The Pirate Rave then takes over the park, with music, drinks and dancing from 8:30-10:30 p.m.
Friday and Saturday will bring even more nautical fun, with the pirate invasion, parade, kids fair, live entertainment and much more.

Explore meteor shower science
Rod Cortright will present a program called “Why Do We Have Meteor Showers?” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Headlands International Dark Sky Park near Mackinaw City.
Cortright will discuss the origins of meteor showers and why they occur on a regular basis throughout the year.
