A regular meeting of the Algonac City Council on Oct. 3 had officials addressing a number of items related to the upcoming homecoming and Halloween seasons.
Bembas’ Adopt a Dog Park
Members of the Algonac City Council took time out at an Oct. 3 meeting to thank Councilman Mike Bembas and his wife Jill for recently adopting the Dog Park at Lions Field. Bembas was instrumental in the development of the dog park, which opened in May 2018.
“We love the dog park and it’s been up there about eight years now,” Mike Bembas said. “We had a lot of help from the community with grants and everything and the best part about our dog park is we used zero tax dollars to build it. I hope many of you take your dogs up there and enjoy it.” A notation on the city website stated ‘the city is grateful for the interest and support of Councilman Bembas, his wife Jill and their family, whose efforts make Algonac a better place to live, work, and play.’ The city recently started Adopt-A-Street and Adopt-A- Park programs and both are modeled after the MDOT Adopt-A-Highway program, where volunteers are asked to pick up litter at least two times per year between April and October. Interested volunteers, service groups, neighbors, or families, should submit an application to the city, which are available on the city’s website at www.cityofalgonac.org. Mayor Pro Tem Ray Martin thanked the Bembas’ for their clean-up efforts at the park during the council comments section of the agenda.
Halloween in the Nac’ set for Oct. 21
Algonac Alive will host their annual Halloween in the Nac’ event at Smith’s Recreation Field on Saturday, Oct. 21. The free event will begin with a parade at 12:30 p.m. at 421 Michigan Street. Games in the park will begin at 1 p.m. and there will also be a Swamp Witch Dance, Kids Tunnel of Terror, Bounce House, Clown Bozo John John and Face Painting. There will also be over 30 vendors and food booths and the duck race on the river will begin at 3 p.m. Mayor Rocky Gillis took a moment to thank Councilman Michael Bembas for all his work on the event and then the council unanimously approved the special event permit. Bembas said the event is always a lot of fun and encouraged everyone to come out for it.
Trick or Treat hours set for Oct. 31
Algonac City Council recently set the hours for this year’s Trick or Treating in the city to be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023. Festivities will be held at Smith Recreation Park with a Trunk or Treat and cars lining up beginning at 4:30 p.m. For safety the city will be closing Clay and Smith streets from Washington to Michigan from 5 to 10 p.m. The Algonac Rotary will be supplying free hot dogs and water while city of Algonac staff cooks and wraps the hot dogs. The annual Algonac Fire Department Bonfire will begin at 7 p.m.
Algonac Homecoming Parade Oct. 6
The Algonac High School Homecoming Parade will line up starting at 4 p.m. at St. Clair Boulevard on Friday, Oct. 6 with the parade stepping off at 4:30 p.m. The sheriff will close M-29 at Smith Street for the event. The parade will be led by a car from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and a car from Clay Township. The DPW will provide barricades at Clay, Fruit, Columbia, Liberty, Summer and the CVS/Flaming Grill driveway. The parade is expected to last about 30 minutes.
