Lions Linked to Addition of Shaquille Leonard

By Jason Berndt

The Detroit Lions have already bolstered their defense midseason by signing defensive end Bruce Irvin. However, A to Z Sports’ Destin Adams suggests that the Lions could further enhance their defense by acquiring inside linebacker Shaquille Leonard, who was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts. Leonard, a first-team All-Pro in 2018, 2019, and 2021, became available on November 21.

Adams writes, “The first contender that comes to mind is the Lions. Leonard shares a similar mindset and tenacity that Dan Campbell’s football team has made their identity on. Leonard would be a tremendous locker room addition for a fairly young defense with little experience in the LB room. The Lions believe for good reason that they are a true Super Bowl contender, and at 8-2, they have backed it up. If they can even get a fraction of the player Leonard used to be, this could be a home run for both sides.”

Before his release, Leonard amassed 65 combined tackles, including 2 tackles for loss, in nine games for the Colts this season. Adams identifies the Lions as one of three potential landing spots for Leonard, alongside the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. Adams suggests that the Lions’ linebacker room may have more experience than initially thought, with Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes leading in snaps. However, he notes that the Lions are heavily relying on first-round rookie Jack Campbell at inside linebacker. If the team desires another veteran presence at linebacker, Leonard could be a valuable option until Campbell is fully ready for a full-time role.

While Leonard, once a defensive monster, has slowed down due to back surgeries, he could still contribute on a rotational basis in 2023. Leonard’s release comes with complications, as he must clear waivers before becoming a free agent. Any team claiming him off waivers will owe him $6.11 million for the rest of the season, presenting a financial challenge for the Lions, who have approximately $3.8 million in remaining salary cap space. If Leonard goes unclaimed on waivers, the Lions (and other teams) can sign him to a new contract for less than $6 million. Despite initial skepticism about Leonard clearing waivers, the high price tag makes it a possibility. Leonard’s unique distinction as the only player in the NFL with more than 15 sacks and 10 interceptions since 2018 adds to the intrigue surrounding his potential acquisition.

The Lions take on Green Bay on Thanksgiving day at 12:30pm.
