Late tonight or early tomorrow morning, Treasure Coast residents have the opportunity to see one of the most famous meteor showers of the year.
The Perseid meteor shower is best seen in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes Florida and the rest of the United States.
Here’s what to know about the Perseid meteor shower and how to see it on the Treasure Coast.
When is the 2026 Perseid meteor shower active?
The Perseid meteor shower is active between July 17 and Aug. 24, according to the American Meteor Society.
When is the Perseid meteor shower’s peak activity?
The meteors will hit their peak activity between Aug. 12-13 as Earth passes through the densest part of the associated comet’s cosmic debris.
The best time to see meteors is between midnight and dawn. The Perseid meteor shower has been known to appear as early as 10 p.m. local time, according to NASA.
When to watch the Perseid meteor shower on the Treasure Coast
The visibility of the Perseid meteor shower will be “excellent” across the Treasure Coast from about 11 p.m. Aug. 12 to 6 a.m. Aug. 13, according to Time and Date.
How many meteors will I be able to see?
Under dark skies, the Perseid meteor shower can produce anywhere from 25 to 100 meteors in an hour that travel at up to 37 miles per second, according to NASA.
Since the meteor shower originated from larger comet material, it also produces bright explosions of light known as fireballs.
