One of the underreported storylines for Texas A&M entering the preseason, with the first fall practice set for Wednesday afternoon, is the backup quarterback battle between sophomore Brady Hart, freshman Helaman Casuga, and redshirt freshman Eli Morcos. On Tuesday, during Mike Elko’s first preseason press conference, the third-year coach spoke about the competition while confirming that Brady Hart will begin camp as QB 2.
Last season, Myles O’Neill, who has since transferred to North Carolina, served as Marcel Reed’s backup, appearing in three games and passing for 120 yards, a touchdown, and 2 interceptions during his final season with the Aggies. After flipping from Michigan before the 2025 season, former four-star signal-caller Brady Hart quickly became one of the more trusted players on the roster given his football IQ and overall fit in the offensive scheme.
Even after Collin Klein, who served as Texas A&M’s offensive coordinator for the last two seasons, departed to take over as Kansas State’s head coach, new OC and former wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins will likely pick up where Klein left off, outside of adding his own wrinkles to the scheme, which requires pinpoint accuracy and quick decision-making, two traits that define Brady Hart’s skillset.
“Brady [Hart] will go into camp as No. 2. Obviously, Helaman [Casuga] and Eli [Morcos] are going to try and uproot him. We’ll kind of see how that plays itself out.”
The only knock against Hart is his thin frame at 6’4″, needing to add more muscle to prevent future injury in the pocket, while Helaman Casuga, also a former four-star prospect, thrives in RPO offenses with the throw velocity to deliver throws in tight windows in the middle of the field, while possessing the arm strength to deliver accurate throws downfield.
Eli Morcos is more of a running quarterback at this stage of his career and will more than likely serve as the No. 3 or 4 option.
