A woman who got out of a vehicle along the M-14 highway near Ann Arbor and ran into traffic was struck and killed by a passing motorist on Sunday night, Aug. 2, the Michigan State Police said.
The 45-year-old Ann Arbor woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on westbound M-14 near Wagner Road in Washtenaw County, the MSP First District said on X on Aug. 3.
The 45-year-old Ann Arbor man who struck the woman with his Jeep Compass was uninjured.
A 32-year-old woman who was driving a Ford Explorer the victim exited, fled the scene, but later was located by police. Troopers will submit a report to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review of possible charges, including operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash, the MSP said.
Troopers were dispatched to the scene at about 11 p.m. Sunday, where a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on westbound M-14.
Police say the woman and a friend had just left a restaurant where they had been drinking alcohol.
While traveling home on M-14, police said, the two became involved in an argument and the passenger demanded to be let out of the vehicle, and opened the door while it was still in motion.
The driver pulled onto the right shoulder of the highway, and the passenger got out and ran into traffic where she was struck by the Compass.
The driver of the Compass stopped, initially believing he had struck a deer, police said. The driver of the Compass was not injured and was determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The driver of the Explorer checked on the victim, observed that she had died, and then left the scene in her vehicle.
Troopers later located the driver of the Explorer, who told investigators that she “panicked” and left the scene.
