Detroit Tigers in All-Star Game: Riley Greene strikes out twice

The Midsummer Classic is here, with four Detroit Tigers players representing the American League.

The 2026 MLB All-Star Game is taking place at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Tuesday, July 14. The game will be televised on Fox. Those looking for a streaming option can find one on Fox One or Fubo, which carries Fox.

Tigers slugger Riley Greene, making his third All-Star appearance, is starting in left field for the AL for the second year in a row. Catcher Dillon Dingler and shortstop Kevin McGonigle were named as reserves for the AL, as both received their first All-Star selection.

Rounding out the list of Tigers All-Stars is starting pitcher Justin Verlander, who was named to his 10th All-Star team as a “Legends Pick.” Verlander won’t appear in the game, however, as the 43-year-old righty continues to rehab from a hamstring injury.

Detroit’s All-Star representation is slightly smaller than that of the 2025 team, which featured six All-Stars and four starters. But this is only the second time in the last decade the Tigers have sent four players to the All-Star Game, demonstrating how much Detroit’s roster has improved in quality over the last few seasons.

We’ll have all the pertinent live updates from the 2026 All-Star Game right here.

MLB All-Star Game live updates

Kevin McGonigle strikes out

Mid 8: Al 4, NL 0.

McGonigle got what was likely his final at-bat in the eighth inning, striking out swinging for the fourth strikeout from a Tigers batter. Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas added a solo home run one batter prior, giving the AL a 4-0 lead.

Dillon Dingler exits game

End 7: AL 3, NL 0.

That’s all she wrote for Dingler, who caught two innings before being replaced by Balitmore Orioles catcher Adley Rutchman. Dingler struck out in his only plate appearance in the fifth inning.

McGonigle is the lone remaining Tiger in the game.

Kevin McGonigle grounds out in first ASG at-bat

Top 6: AL 3, NL 0.

McGonigle was the first Tigers hitter to put the ball in play tonight, grounding out to second baseman Luis Arraez to lead off the sixth inning.

Tigers batters are 0-for-4 with three strikeouts so far this game. Dingler and McGonigle are expected to get at least one more plate appearance each, while Greene is out of the game entirely.

The final Tigers All Star has entered the game, with McGonigle coming in to replace Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. He is scheduled to lead off in the sixth inning.

Greene exits the game for Seattle Mariners left fielder Randy Arozarena. He finishes the game 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.

Dillon Dingler strikes out

Mid 5: Al 3, NL 0.

Dingler got his first at-bat with one out in the fifth inning facing Washington Nationals pitcher Foster Griffin, striking out on five pitches in his first-ever All-Star Game appearance.

Dillon Dingler enters game

Dingler replaces starting catcher Shea Langeliers in the bottom of the fourth inning, and with Greene still in the game, that puts two Tigers in the field.

Riley Greene strikes out in the 4th

Mid 4: AL 3, NL 0.

Greene struck out on four pitches against Phillies lefty Jesús Luzardo, who then made quick work of second baseman Ernie Clement and center fielder Mike Trout.

That is likely the last at-bat for Greene tonight, who struck out twice and has had no defensive chances in the outfield.

AL strands two runners in the 3rd, Greene to lead off the 4th

Mid 3: AL 3, NL 0.

A’s catcher Shea Langeliers led off the first inning with a single before third baseman Junior Caminero was hit on the hand with a pitch. Caminero left the game and was replaced by Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas.

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then grounded to third baseman Max Muncy, who stepped on third base for one out but couldn’t complete the double play at first. Center fielder Cody Bellinger then flew out and Ben Rice struck out to end the inning.

Greene is scheduled to lead off the fourth inning, if he isn’t substituted out, first.

Riley Greene strikes out, AL gets on board in 1st inning

Mid 1: AL 3, NL 0.

A Yordan Alvarez single and Shea Langeliers walk put two runners on for the AL with just one out, while a Junior Caminero groundout advanced both runners into scoring position. Starting shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then walked to load the bases, and right fielder Cody Bellinger singled to score Alvarez from third base and Langeliers from second.

First baseman Ben Rice then singled off of NL starter Christopher Sánchez to score Witt, bringing Greene up to bat. Greene struck out on four pitches to end the inning, however, though not without the AL taking a big first-inning lead.

Verlander: All-Star experience ‘doesn’t get old’

Verlander was asked pregame by AL starting pitcher Dylan Cease if the All-Star experience ever gets old, and the 10-time All-Star told the Fox broadcast that it hasn’t for him.

“It’s about the people here,” he said. “Getting to meet new guys that you compete against. So I have to soak it all up, it’s such an honor.”

Verlander, who has made two starts in the All-Star Game (2012 with the Tigers and 2019 with the Astros) said that starting the All-Star Game is one of the highlights of his career.

“It’s up there with the World Series, I don’t know, 1A and 1B,” he said.

Riley Greene signs the ‘Declaration’

As part of a Philadelphia-centered gimmick, All-Star starters signed a giant lineup card shaped like the Declaration of Independence upon entering the field. Greene’s name is on that card, though it doesn’t seem like the feather the players are using is leaving a strong mark on the paper.

Kevin McGonigle gets loud ovation during introductions

The Delaware County native McGonigle got a loud ovation from the Philadelphia crowd, the loudest likely coming from McGonigle’s friends and family at the All-Star Game.

Verlander got a mixed reaction from the Philadelphia crowd, however, with the veteran laughing at a smattering of boos throughout the ballpark.

Justin Verlander on the red carpet

Verlander won’t be appearing in tonight’s All-Star Game as he continues rehabbing an injury. But he and his family, including wife Kate Upton, came in looking like royalty on the red carpet.

Kevin McGonigle meets his hero

This All-Star Game is a homecoming of sorts for McGonigle, who grew up a 20-minute drive from Citizens Bank Park while supporting Phillies players like Chase Utley growing up.

McGonigle got to meet Utley as part of his first All-Star experience, with the Tigers sharing the encounter on social media.
