A child was saved from drowning on Tuesday, July 7, at the Goldfish Swim School in Farmington Hills.
Farmington Hills police and firefighters responded to the school located at 22710 Haggerty Road “after an 8-year-old girl was found underwater,” Lester Booker Jr., a spokesperson for the City of Farmington Hills, said in an emailed statement on Wednesday.
“Staff pulled her from the pool, CPR was performed, and she was taken to Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital, where we were informed she was conscious and alert.”
Katie Lee, co-owner of Goldfish Swim School, confirmed that a non-fatal accident occurred during open swim on July 7 at the Farmington Hills school.”Our team immediately implemented our emergency response procedures, and the swimmer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation,” she said, adding that, to the best of her knowledge, the child involved was doing well.
“The safety and well-being of our members is our highest priority,” she continued. “We are proud of our team for responding quickly and following established safety protocols. Our thoughts are with the swimmer and their loved ones, and we remain committed to providing a safe, supportive environment for every child and family who visits our school.”
Goldfish Swim School is a franchise that was founded in 2006 in Birmingham and has grown to multiple locations across the United States and Canada.
According to their website, the school focuses on “building character one stroke at a time” with guided play and a safe environment. Goldfish Swim School offers year-round swim lessons for children from 4 months to 12 years old, with one instructor for every four children.
Per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5-14.
Every year in the United States, there are more than 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths.
