MILWAUKEE Cincinnati Reds centerfielder Dane Myers was hurting in so many areas of his body after a full-speed crash into the wall during Monday’s game against the Brewers that the team didn’t chance it – even after initial x-rays at the ballpark were negative.
“We went him to the hospital because he was in so much pain and so uncomfortable,” manager Terry Francona said. “And it wasn’t going away.”
Myers seemed to favor his left arm after he fell to the ground and rolled over in pain, holding on to the ball after the spectacular, lunging catch in the fourth inning but then throwing off his glove after hitting the ground.
He was carted off the field, and the area of greatest pain or injury was not even clear after the game, and long after he’d left for the nearby hospital.
“Shoulder, neck, head, ribs. There’s so much. We’d all be guessing,” Francona said. “I think they want to check for a lot of things. You saw how violent it was. And he was really in pain. We’ll see what we can find out.”
Myers reached Andrew Vaughn’s deep drive to center about five feet from the wall and had little time to protect himself before hitting the wall face- and headfirst.
“He kind of tucked and just ran into the wall,” Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo said. “Thank goodness he tucked, for sure. It definitely didn’t look great.
“Glad the initial reports so far are that he’s good.”
Despite the violence and force of the impact Myers never appeared to lose consciousness, although Francona suggested the outfielder might not have been fully cognizant afterward.
“That was an amazing catch,” said Francona, who appeared as impressed with the ability to hold on afterward as the catch itself. “He’s fearless going to the wall. Probably like nobody I’ve ever seen.”
The Reds led 1-0 at the time and would extend that to 3-0 before the Brewers came back to win 5-3.
