Dolphins named landing spot for disgruntled star WR

The Miami Dolphins have a much different wide receiver room heading into training camp than they did last year, as they’ve moved on from Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, D’Wayne Eskridge and Cedrick Wilson Jr.

To replace those guys, the Dolphins have added Tutu Atwell, Jalen Tolbert, Terrace Marshall Jr., Jalen Reagor, Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell, Kevin Coleman Jr. and Donaven McCulley.

With a lack of experience and top-end talent at the position, some have wondered if Miami will look to add another wide receiver before the season starts, and Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski even went as far as to list the team as a potential landing spot for Brandon Aiyuk in a trade.

“Bobby Slowik is the team’s offensive coordinator. He served as the 49ers’ passing game coordinator in 2022 when Aiyuk posted his first 1,000-yard campaign and was named a second-team All-Pro. Slowik understands how to build a passing game around Aiyuk’s skill set, which should greatly help in Willis’ maturation as a full-time NFL starter,” Sobleski wrote.

“The Dolphins are building toward the future, and this season should be viewed as a transition phase. On his current deal, Aiyuk is under team control through the 2028 season, giving Miami a chance to build a stronger supporting cast around Willis or another quarterback drafted next April.”

The 28-year-old has been productive when on the field, catching 294 passes for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns in 69 games since the San Francisco 49ers took him in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Arizona State.

However, Aiyuk hasn’t played football since midway through the 2024 season when he tore his ACL. He cut off communication with the 49ers last year and his guarantees voided, which has led the team and player to be in a stand-off over the last few months.

With Aiyuk’s social media antics, which included calling his general manager and head coach predators in recent days, the Dolphins might want to stay away, even if they could get a potential WR1 for a seventh-round pick, as Sobleski suggests.
