Detroit police received a report that two girls were in the water at Maheras-Gentry Park at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Fifth Precinct Commander Lawrence Purifoy said in a video.

One of the girls was recovered from the water and is OK, but the other did not resurface, Purifoy said.

“Unfortunately, our rescue efforts turned into a recovery effort,” Purifoy said. “Our prayers go out to her friends and family.”

The girl’s body was later recovered, he said, and no other information about the incident was then available.

The Dive Team, Coast Guard, Fire Department and Harbor Master assisted in the recovery effort.

Maheras-Gentry Park, 12550 Avondale St., is a 53-acre park along the Detroit River with a lagoon and pedestrian bridge.
