Novi Police do not suspect foul play or any criminal intent in the death of a dialysis patient and the illnesses of several others who had been treated at the DaVita Dialysis Center in the city.
City of Novi Communications Director Sheryl Walsh said in a June 25 press release that police had worked closely with local and state health officials in reviewing all information regarding the cases and “at this time, no evidence of suspicious activity, foul play, or criminal conduct has been identified.”
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to oversee the ongoing public health investigation, which was begun June 21 when the family of a 72-year-old patient made a missing person report when their loved one did not return home following a dialysis appointment at DaVita Novi, 27150 Providence Parkway.
Police found the individual deceased in a vehicle and subsequently learned in their investigation that four individuals treated at DaVita had recently sought medical treatment at Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital, including one who was in the intensive care unit.
The Novi DaVita Dialysis Center was closed at the request of the Oakland County Health Division as a “precautionary measure.”
Gabby, a spokesperson for DaVita, said in an email that the company was “aware of the incident and out of respect for patient privacy, we are unable to comment on its specifics.”
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which is now conducting the public health investigation, did not immediately return a call for comment.
The City of Novi expects no further updates from a law enforcement perspective and extended condolences to the family of the deceased individual and to all those affected.
