A celebration of the Soo Locks and its engineers

Thousands of people are expected to flood into downtown Sault Ste. Marie to experience the Engineers Day fun.

“We’re very aware of the fact that the Soo Locks is our biggest tourist attraction and we celebrate that here,” said Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau Marketing and Content Assistant Lauren Mulder.

The Soo Locks are operated and maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Detroit District, with a dedicated office that oversees the locks, 75 miles of navigation channels and numerous Great Lakes harbors. The facility operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the shipping season while handling more than 7,000 vessel passages annually.

While it is difficult to confirm an accurate count of the number of engineers that live and work in the community, a September 2024 article in Engineering News & Record estimated that several hundred engineers live and work in or around Sault Ste. Marie. Some local employers of engineers include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Great Lakes shipping companies, construction-related firms involved with the Soo Locks, electric and hydropower companies, and more.

“There are a lot of good job opportunities around here for engineers,” Mulder said, adding that this is one of the draws for recruiting families to the region.

Lake Superior State University also offers accredited Bachelor of Science engineering degrees and associate and engineering technology pathways in fields such as electrical, mechanical and computer engineering.

This year’s event comes as construction continues on the New Lock at the Soo project. Access to the locks is limited this year, but Engineers Day organizers have expanded educational displays and community activities throughout the park and downtown.

“Most of the events are free and you can choose from (several) segments and activities around town to take part in,” Mulder said.
