After a strong showing throughout minicamp and early OTA work, Egbuka referred to the third-round pick as “lightning in a bottle”.
Hurst, a 6’4 receiver with 4.4 speed, has quickly stood out in a crowded Buccaneers wide receiver group that already features established veterans and emerging young talent. Despite the competition, he has consistently flashed ability, especially on vertical routes and contested catches downfield. For Egbuka, who is also adjusting to a larger role in Tampa Bay’s offense, Hurst’s skill set has been hard to ignore.
Egbuka’s praise carries weight not only because of Hurst’s performance, but because of how competitive the wide receiver room has become. With targets at a premium, every rep matters, and every mistake is magnified. Even so, the early connection between the two young receivers has been a positive storyline for Tampa Bay’s offense, which is looking to redefine itself after a disappointing 2025 season. Hurst could see himself thrust into a larger role, unlike most rookies, so the immediate high praise could be the precursor to a big season for the big receiver with even bigger shoes to fill after Mike Evans departure.
