An incident in Detroit in 1958 involving a “circular object with a crystal-type dome” appeared in a trove of documents released by the U.S. Department of War (DOW) on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).
The FBI memo is among the hundreds of documents released by the war department. The third and latest collection of files was released on June 12. The first files, containing the Detroit incident, were released on May 8, 2026.
The FBI memo from April 17, 1958, reports a UFO sighting by David Weaver, who at the time lived at 15801 Decosta, was 23 years old, and saw the object on his way home from work.
According to the internal document, Weaver said the object was passing north from southwest Detroit and crossed three blocks south of Six Mile at Lamphere Street.
Weaver said he attempted to call Selfridge Field to alert the Air Force but was unsuccessful. He later contacted the local FBI office to report the incident.
The war department says the federal government is unable to confirm the nature of the observed phenomena due to the lack of sufficient data.
