Campaign under way to fund women's sports bar in Detroit

Amid the fervor and excitement of women’s sports in Detroit, the first women’s pop-up sports bar, Bar IX, is launching a crowdfunding effort to help the group secure a permanent location.

“Detroit deserves this,” a campaign flyer from the organization reads, “We’re very close to announcing a location that we can share with all of you − your contributions will help us get there faster.”

Detroit is experiencing somewhat of a women’s sports renaissance with the WNBA announcing its expansion to Detroit in 2029, the league announced last year.

Additionally, a Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) expansion team is expected to begin play later this year, and a women’s flag football team is coming to Eastern Michigan University in 2027.

The event is set to take place on Tuesday, June 30, at the Detroit Shipping Co., at 474 Peterboro St.

The four-hour event, which runs from 6-10 p.m., coincides with the WNBA Commissioners Cup, the sixth installment of the league’s version of an in-season tournament.

Attendees of the event can watch the game, featuring the New York Liberty (11-6) and reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces (12-4), win prizes by answering questions about women’s sports trivia, and enjoy music from DJ Myin, according to the online description.

Bar IX started an online fundraiser to support their new location.

As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 22, the account had raised more than $25,000 of the requested $125,000.
