O’Hair Park, Rouge Park and Chandler Park in Detroit will host weekly produce giveaways this summer.
The food comes from Detroit Eastern Market. The Pistons Neighbors Program − a partnership between the Detroit Parks Coalition, Detroit Pistons Foundation, and the city of Detroit Parks and Recreation Division − funds the weekly events.
At O’Hair Park, the giveaways are scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. Wednesdays starting June 24 and run through Aug. 12.
At Rouge Park, the giveaways are slated for 3 p.m. Fridays starting June 26 and running through Aug. 13.
At Chandler Park, the giveaways are slated for 3 p.m. Thursdays starting June 25 and running through Sept. 24.
Alex Allen, president and CEO at the Chandler Park Conservancy, said this is the park’s fourth year partnering with Eastern Market, and he expects demand to be high for the first-come-first-serve giveaways.
“If we get produce and we start to give it away at 3 o’clock, by 4 o’clock it’s all gone,” he said. “We give away as much as can, but it’s never enough.”
Allen said the specific produce items will depend on the market’s weekly supply.
“Sometimes, we’ll get oranges, we’ll get apples, we’ll get grapes, cherries. We’ll get turnips, we’ll get peppers, we’ll get greens. It’s always something a little bit different.”
