Detroit Federation of Teachers reaches tentative two-year contract agreement

The Detroit Federation of Teachers has reached a tentative bargaining agreement with the school district through the end of the 2027-2028 school year, the union announced Friday.

The union, which has more than 5,000 members, said in a news release that the two-year tentative agreement is the earliest one has been reached since June of 1994. The union’s members will vote next week to ratify the terms.

“This contract is a step forward in the right direction. We are reclaiming ground by restoring rights and providing new protections and incentives, offering competitive salaries, and improving facilities to retain and attract great talent,” the union said in a statement.

A union spokesperson couldn’t immediately be reached for details about the terms of the agreement. A district spokesperson couldn’t immediately be reached.

Detroit Public Schools Community District is the largest school district in the state with more than 50,000 students.

Some of the positions represented by the Detroit Federation of Teachers include teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses and paraprofessionals.

“We are demonstrating to our members that the work that we do is irreplaceable and vital to the community that we serve,” said DFT leaders in a press release. “We remain committed to providing the best educational services and opportunities that our students so rightfully deserve.”

The union will hold a special informational meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Ratification voting will begin after the meeting and run through 3 p.m. Wednesday. A press conference will be held at 3:30pm via Zoom on Wednesday.
