Riverside County sheriff's deputy charged with manslaughter in crash

A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving in a high-speed crash that killed another driver while the deputy was responding to a call.

The charges in the September 2025 traffic collision, which also severely injured another person, were announced Thursday, June 18, by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office. Criminal charges against law-enforcement officers for on-duty conduct are relatively rare.

The DA’s office said there was a warrant out for Deputy Glynn Wilburn’s arrest and he had not turned himself in as of around 4 p.m. Thursday.

An investigation found that Wilburn was driving from Beaumont to Calimesa for a report of gunshots on Sept. 6, 2025. He was driving around 100 mph on Cherry Valley Boulevard. Wilburn then entered an intersection and his car was going 71 mph when it struck the other vehicle, the DA’s office said.

The crash killed the driver of the other car and severely injured the passenger, who was the driver’s fiancee.

Dispatchers had reported “moments before the collision” that other deputies had arrived at the scene of the reported shooting, there were no injuries and the suspect’s car had left the scene, the DA’s office said, seemingly alleging it was no longer necessary for Wilburn to be driving so fast to the scene.

The DA’s office filed charges against the 42-year-old Wilburn on Wednesday, June 17 for gross vehicular manslaughter and felony reckless driving causing serious injury, with an enhancement for great bodily injury.

Under state law, a person is guilty of reckless driving if they drive “in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property” and guilty of vehicular manslaughter if they drive a vehicle “with gross negligence,” among other factors.

An arraignment had not been scheduled as of Thursday, the DA’s office added.
