Rams' canceled minicamp proves why players want to play for Sean McVay

The Los Angeles Rams should have wrapped up mandatory minicamp earlier this week if they had stayed on their originally released schedule. However, Rams head coach Sean McVay made the decision to cancel minicamp, allowing players to get a head start on their summer break before the start of training camp.

The Rams have a reputation around the league as an organization that prioritizes the health, happiness, and well-being of its players. They have prioritized families in the McVay era and are constantly making improvements to their overall approach to day-to-day operations.

The reality is that there wasn’t much for the Rams to gain with a minicamp, especially with a roster that has been in the system for years. However, with training camp leading into the preseason and then the regular season, those additional days off mean a lot, especially to players and coaches with families, as this is likely the most time they’ll get to spend with them for the remainder of the year.

The loss of a few days of practice has not been the difference between championship contention and championship success. In 2024 and 2025, the Rams were one play away. They didn’t have the talent, and the other team had a say. Every hole has been filled, and if the Rams are to make a championship run in 2026, the continued prioritization of the person over their position will be a big reason why.

So, despite their cutthroat approach to roster management, the Rams are still able to land big-time names because of how they treat players during their time in Los Angeles. That’s how they got Davante Adams to commit, and how they got Myles Garrett to waive his no-trade clause. In a league that’s clearly operating on a year-to-year cycle, and where loyalty is rare, the emphasis on day-to-day treatment has set the Rams apart and allowed them to quickly fix roster issues.
