Only a few teams spent more in free agency this offseason than the Indianapolis Colts.
Of course, bolstering the Colts’ overall spending were the deals for Daniel Jones and Alec Pierce. But going beyond those contracts, this was a very active offseason for GM Chris Ballard, with there being quite a bit of roster turnover.
During the initial free agency waves, the Colts made nine outside additions, along with trading for Colby Wooden.
In total, the Colts spent $256.6 million in free agency, according to CBS Sports. This ranked as the fourth-most in the NFL.
“They also made wide receiver Alec Pierce the highest-paid free agent wide receiver in NFL history with a $29 million average per year salary on a four-year, $116 million contract with $60 million fully guaranteed,” wrote Garrett Podell. “The Colts paid up after Pierce became the first player to average 20-plus yards per reception in consecutive seasons since Flipper Anderson in 1989-1990. Now, they both just need to stay healthy.”
However, despite how active the Colts were, numerous unknowns remain, most notably how Jones will bounce back from his Achilles injury.
But in addition to that, whether or not the Colts added enough pass rush juice to pair with Laiatu Latu remains to be seen. The WR3 role is up for grabs, and the offensive line depth is quite thin. The Colts will also roll out a brand-new linebacker unit this season.
All of those unknowns culminate to create the biggest remaining question facing the Colts — how much have they improved this offseason? Remaining healthy and internal growth will be key to ending their playoff drought.
