Monroe County primaries feature crowded fields, key local races

It’s primary season in New York, with a full slate of candidates duking it out on the local, state and federal level.

The races set for the June 23 primary include a three-way race for a seat in Congress, a jampacked state Assembly ticket and some competitive local primaries. How these races shake out won’t just determine the candidates in the November races but outright determine some.

Key Monroe County primary elections

NY-25 Congressional District: Incumbent Congressman Joe Morelle faces a pair of challengers in Robin Wilt and Sherita Traywick for the seat he was first elected to in 2018. Wilt previously ran for the same seat in 2018 and served on the Brighton Town Board from 2018 to 2025. Traywick served six years on the Greece Central School District Board of Education and has worked at Rochester Institute of Technology and Schenectady Community College.

State Assembly 130th District: A pair of primaries will select the Republican and Democratic candidates for the Assembly district containing Webster and all of Wayne County. With incumbent Brian Manktelow, a Republican, not seeking reelection, the open seat has attracted a busy field of contenders including two Democrats, Carl Fitzsimmons and Joseph Lamanna, and three Republicans – Summer Johnson, George Dobbins and Mark Johns. Johns, a Monroe County legislator and former state Assemblyman, and Fitzsimmons are both Webster residents.

Fairport Village Mayor: Deputy Mayor Heidi Woika will be on the ballot in November regardless of the result of the primary on the Working Families line, but a primary win over Tracy Briggs would leave her as the only name on the ballot. Briggs is currently serving as a village trustee.
