Brendan Sorsby granted injunction, eligible for Texas Tech in 2026

The news that everyone in Lubbock and the entire college football world was waiting for came down on Monday morning, and it certainly created some waves.

A judge in Texas officially granted an injunction for Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby, making him eligible to play for the 2026 season after having his eligibility relinquished following a gambling scandal in which the QB reportedly placed over $90,000 worth of bets, including on his own team.

According to the injunction, he will be suspended for the first two games of the 2026 season.

“This court finds that applicant has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 football team,” the injunction states.

The NCAA cannot prevent Sorsby from “practicing, playing or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 season,” the injunction states.

The decision on Monday sparked quite a reaction on social media from fans and media members, with many upset over the outcome. However, the NCAA was unable to uphold its rules once again and will now be filing an appeal to the injunction, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

As part of the two-game suspension, Sorsby will miss the season-opener against Abilene Christian and Week 2 against the Oregon State Beavers. He will be back for the Big 12 opener against the Houston Cougars.
