The summer has officially begun, which means recruiting has taken centerstage in the college football world. Texas is in the center of it, including being in the middle of a major recruiting weekend. However, today’s headline is around a player not currently on campus. Briceson Thrower, three-star WR from Forney, Texas is committing tonight at 7 p.m. CT on CBS Sports.
Thrower is deciding between Texas, Illinois, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Of those, it seems it’s really a Longhorns-Illini battle for the pass catcher. Thrower, despite being a three-star, is highly regarded in the industry and would be the perfect addition beside Easton Royal in this WR class. The good news for Texas is it seems they are in the catbird’s seat to earn his commitment tonight.
If Texas earns the commitment, they are getting a lengthy, high potential player. He has run track throughout high school, posting a 23.31 200-yard dash as a sophomore. In his junior season, he reeled in 32 catches for 529 yards and 5 TDs. Thrower shines in 1-on-1 coverage, using his length and hands to consistently win 50/50 balls. As the nuances of the game continue to develop, this could be a special player for Texas.
One wrinkle to this process is his upcoming schedule. Despite a commitment coming tonight, he is still scheduled to visit Illinois next weekend and then Austin shortly after. Now, those plans could change and the Illinois visit be canceled, but that’s unknown. I would argue whether they are cancelled or not, this commitment will stick after tonight. No matter what, if Texas gets good news tonight, the WR class adds a high-upside depth piece alongside the star power of Easton Royal.
