Man in Florida charged with attempted murder after shooting

An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a Fort Pierce shooting on June 2 that critically injured a 17-year-old girl, police officials said.

Jah’shaun Crosby was arrested on the morning of June 3 and charged with attempted murder, Maj. Michael Santiago told TCPalm June 4.

Police officers responded to a shooting about 10:20 p.m. June 2 in the 500 block of North 19th Street and found a 17-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso on the steps outside a house, Santiago said.

She was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with non-life-threating injuries, he said, and she remained hospitalized as of June 4 in critical condition.

When officers, K-9 units and detectives began their investigation, Santiago said, people who were on the scene at the time of the shooting weren’t cooperating at first with giving information.

It was only after a K-9 unit searching for firearms located a gun believed to have been used in the shooting hidden on the porch of the house that people began to give their witness accounts, he said.

Using witness accounts, briefly speaking to the 17-year-old girl and surveillance video footage, police officials were able to put together what happened.

A group of people were hanging out when two of them, Crosby and the 17-year-old girl, became involved in a verbal altercation at some point outside the home, Santiago said. The two knew each other and were involved in some kind of relationship.

That led to a physical altercation where Crosby began hitting her, based on witness accounts, Santiago said. Then, people heard a gunshot, she went down, and Crosby fled the area.

Officials found Crosby about 5 a.m. or 6 a.m. the next morning at his mother’s house in the 1200 block of Nobles Terrace, located less than a mile away from the shooting.

Crosby remained in the St. Lucie County Jail on June 4 with a $500,000 bail, according to the jail’s website.

Anyone with information about the ongoing investigation should contact the Fort Pierce Police Department at 772-462-6800 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at tcwatch.org.
