'Squatters: Get the F*** Out Of My House' includes Florida episode

A new docuseries from executive producers Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, highlighting six shocking cases of squatters taking advantage of legal loopholes to live in homes they don’t own rent-free, premiered today, June 4.

The story of Patti Peeples, a Jacksonville, Florida, homeowner who would later help pass a property rights bill in the Sunshine State, is featured in an episode of “Squatters: Get The F*** Out of My House.”

The six-part series “follows ordinary people blindsided by manipulators who know exactly how to weaponize tenant protections and turn the legal system against the very people it’s supposed to protect, according to ABC News Studios, which co-produced the show along with Milojo.

“When squatters — and their pit bull puppies — take over a Jacksonville home, police can’t remove them. But Patti Peeples fights back from the sidewalk for 36 days, only to discover the squatters’ final act of revenge,” the episode description reads.

The Jacksonville woman experienced a squatter situation when she tried to sell one of her rental properties, only to find two squatters had moved into the house.

In 2024, Peeples told the Osceola News-Gazette she was harassed and physically assaulted by the squatters. She reportedly called the police, but the squatters claimed to have a lease, even showing false evidence. Police could do nothing.

By the time Peeples was able to get the squatters out of her property, they’d done $40,000 in damage, she said.

Peeples started advocating for squatting to be made a crime instead of a civil issue. According to Fox News, two Florida lawmakers worked with her and the Florida Legislature eventually passed a bill to address squatters.

HB 621 went into effect in 2024. The law protects homeowners’ rights, provides remedies against squatters and increases penalties for those squatting.

According to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office, under HB 621, a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter from their property if the following conditions are met:

“Squatters don’t discriminate. They just simply are looking for a place to stay, and you could go away for a weekend trip and come home and find squatters in your home. So, that’s not going to happen anymore in Florida,” Peeples told Fox News.
