The latest viral food sensation is dot cake.
People are asking for it online, and influencers are going bananas over the texture of the very thick top layer of crunchy, colorful sprinkles. Like most things that go viral online, it’s not really anything new; it’s just popular again, or a new version has made it take off.
At least one area bakery thinks the trend is “a little ridiculous.”
“We fought it. We rolled our eyes at it. We asked ‘Do people really want this many sprinkles?'” asked Luca Pastry of Canton to their Facebook followers. “Apparently, yes. So after enough requests, we finally gave in and made the dot cake.”
“After trying one, we have to admit they’re pretty darn good,” they added.
Here’s everything you need to know about dot cake in Metro Detroit.
What is dot cake?
It’s kind of like a cupcake with sprinkles or a cake-in-a-cup. Many versions have a round of fluffy yellow cake with a layer of frosting (usually white, but any kind will work). A second layer of each of those is added to the cup, finished with a thick coating of multi-colored sprinkles. Those are the “dots.”
You can make these at home as easily as you can make cake from a box mix and pop open a can of frosting. The hardest part may be finding the right sprinkles at the grocery store.
How did the dot cake trend start?
According to Food & Wine, the trend started with the company the Dotcakes out of Roslyn Heights, New York. There’s a storefront, but they also take custom orders online at thedotcakes.com.
