A house fire near Stuart that temporarily closed a roadway likely was caused by a lightning strike, said Martin County Fire Rescue officials.
Crews went about 11 a.m. June 3 to a house fire in the 2500 block of Southeast St. Lucie Boulevard, said Fire Rescue spokesperson Jillian Kay. The house was located on Willoughby Creek on the St. Lucie River, south of Witham Field Airport.
The fire started on the second floor of the home and burned two bedrooms before firefighters quickly stopped the flames from spreading to the rest of the house, officials said.
Everyone inside the home was safe, officials said, and no one was injured.
It’s unknown how many people were inside at the time of the fire because all occupants were out of the house before crews arrived, Kay told TCPalm.
Initial reports showed a possible lightning strike started the fire, but the State Fire Marshal was investigating the cause.
St. Lucie Boulevard was closed in both directions at Southeast Fox Lane as crews checked for hot spots and made sure the fire didn’t reignite before the roadway reopened by 1:45 p.m.
