On Monday night, the USC baseball team defeated Texas A&M 7-1 in the decisive game of the College Station Regional. With the victory, the Trojans advanced to the super regionals for the first time since 2005.
Taking down A&M was especially significant given how USC’s season has played out. Between the regular season and Big Ten Tournament, USC played 11 games against top 25 teams. The Trojans went a brutal 1-10 in those contests.
In addition, USC struggled significantly on the road during the regular season. While they finished an incredible 32-1 at Dedeaux Field, the Trojans were just 12-13 in away games.
When the stage was the biggest, however, Andy Stankiewicz’s team completely flipped the script. This past weekend, USC went into the heart of Texas and beat the No. 12 team in the country on consecutive nights on its home field. Not only that, but the Trojans did it in convincing fashion, winning the two games by a combined score of 21-4.
In sports, it is often about not how you start, but how you finish. For most of the year, USC struggled on the road and in its biggest games. When the tournament rolled around, however, that completely flipped. As a result, the Trojans are headed to a super regional for the first time in 21 years.
