A Columbus woman was in the process of ending her marriage when, police allege, her husband stabbed and shot her and her 11-year-old daughter to death in their home on the city’s Southeast Side, according to court records.
Officers responded to the 2000 block of Chadsworth Way at 7:11 p.m. May 27 after relatives requested a wellfare check for Shalimar Green, 33, and Aliv’eyah Chandler, 11, police said in a news release.
A Columbus police spokesperson said the two were found stabbed in a home in the Independence Village residential subdivision, northeast of Gender Road. Medics declared both Green and Aliv’eyah dead at the scene.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the Franklin County Municipal Court, investigators learned from relatives that Green was in the process of ending her marriage to Derrick Green, 35.
The previous night, Shalimar had found Derrick sleeping with a knife on the couch, detectives allege in the affidavit. She took the knife away and confronted him about why he had it.
Shalimar Green and Chandler had multiple gunshot wounds and stab wounds, according to the affidavit. Detectives found a knife, spent cartridges and bloody clothing in the home.
Derrick Green had sometimes been sleeping in a red Dodge Challenger that was parked outside the home May 27, according to the affidavit. Detectives alleged that .380-caliber ammunition matching the spent cartridges inside the home were in the car’s front passenger seat.
Derrick Green fled the scene before police arrived, but SWAT officers found and arrested him later that night, according to the news release.
Police have not said how Chandler is related to Derrick Green.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the stabbing to contact the Columbus police Homicide Unit at 614-645-3688 or provide an anonymous tip to Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
Derrick Green previously indicted on murder charges in 2021 New Year’s shooting
In January 2021, a Franklin County grand jury indicted Derrick Green with murder after prosecutors accused him of shooting a man to death after an argument at a New Year’s party.
Kenneth Palmer, 31, died in the shooting.
Detectives told The Dispatch at the time that Derrick Green and Palmer argued at a New Year’s party Green hosted. Palmer left the party but later returned, and the argument continued.
Police dispatchers said a person called 911 just after 4 a.m. that day to say he shot someone three times outside the apartment. Palmer was taken in critical condition to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he died.
On Feb. 11, 2021, a grad jury returned a “no bill” in the case, meaning there was not enough evidence to try Green on the charges. A grand jury representative wrote in court records that the investigation was not complete.
In August 2023, another Franklin County grand jury indicted Green on charges of strangulation and domestic violence. That case ended in a similar no bill in October 2023.
