Shane Steichen on state of Colts' WR competition early in OTAs

One of the more intriguing positional battles that will take place this summer for the Indianapolis Colts is at the wide receiver position, specifically replacing Michael Pittman’s role within the offense.

While both Alec Pierce and Josh Downs are back, the Colts traded Pittman to Pittsburgh earlier this offseason, leaving a void at wideout that has to be filled.

Competing for that WR3 role will be Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Deion Burks, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine.

“We’re working through that right now,” Steichen said on Monday of replacing Pittman. “Obviously, we’re in two weeks of practice right now, but Dulin’s made some good plays. Tread’s (Laquon Treadwell) made some good plays. Dulan had a great play today in the back of the end zone there. So those guys are stepping up, and I’m pleased with where that group’s at right now.”

According to Jake Arthur, Dulin caught two touchdown throws during the 7-on-7 periods in Monday’s OTA practice.

While one of those wideouts will be a starter on paper, replacing Pittman is likely going to be a group effort, with the weekly matchup and in-game situations dictating who sees more snaps.

Pierce, Downs, as well as Tyler Warren, will also factor into that equation, with more targets likely coming their way.
