Newly-signed UDFA wideout has 7 players to compete with for roster spots

After working out former SMU receiver Romello Brinson early on their first day of OTAs, the Dallas Cowboys have signed the UDFA. He joins a receiver room with the three or four positions set at the top, but questions behind them. Brinson immediately comes in to compete against seven other receivers on this roster, battling for two, possibly three roster spots. He’ll have to stand out on special teams, while also learning a new playbook and tightening up his route-running if he wants to make the roster.

The Cowboys already have the likes of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, whom they signed this offseason. He has the most NFL experience of the group and has a similar skill set to Brinson, so that narrows his chances even more to make the roster. But Dallas did show interest in Brinson leading up to the draft, taking him and fellow SMU receiver Jordan Hudson to dinner after pro day workouts.

The Cowboys initially signed Hudson as an UFDA, so Brinson will be competing against his former teammate for a spot on the roster or practice squad. Adding two more receivers Brinson will battle with, the Cowboys’ last two seventh-round picks, Anthony Smith and Traeshon Holden are in the mix. One has a year in the playbook and the other is a player they liked enough to draft over Brinson.

The OTAs will be important for Brinson to stand out among the group before training camp, but with the numerous hurdles ahead of him, he’ll look to climb a very large hill to make the roster or the practice squad.
