Track roundup: Grand Ledge's Katie Blue finishes as double state champion

Katie Blue was a double champion while helping the Grand Ledge girls track team tied for fifth at the Division 1 state finals at Rockford High School.

The Comets had 25 points, while East Lansing was seventh with 23 points. Oak Park won the meet with 61 points.

Blue set personal bests while winning the pole vault and 300 hurdles. Blue cleared 14-0 in the pole vault and won the 300 hurdles in 43.14 seconds.

The Comets also had Hailey Ellis place fourth in the discus with a throw of 132-11.

East Lansing was led by Cayla Hawkins, who won the 400 with a personal-best time of 52.89 seconds. She was also part of a 1,600 relay team that finished third in 3:55.84.

DIVISION 2

Haslett’s Christina Dixon, Portland’s Brady Rowe and Corunna’s Logan Herrick each finished their high school track careers as state champions at Hamilton High School.

Dixon won the 400 and had a personal-best time of 55.69 seconds and also finished seventh in the 200. Rowe won the 400 with a personal-best of 47.9 seconds, while Herrick was the 300 hurdles champion with a personal-best of 38.02

Owosso’s Gabriella Hufnagel finished as the 300 hurdles runner-up and eighth in the 100 hurdles to highlight other area girls performers. Eaton Rapids sophomore Remie Ellis placed eighth in the 1,600.

On the boys side, Owosso’s Eli Worthington was fourth in the shot put and discus. Portland’s Derek Le Du was sixth in the discus and Haslett’s Cullen Delaney placed seventh.

Williamston had Duncan Palmer take third in the 800 and Tommy Pratt take fifth in the long jump

St. Johns had Nolan Cullens take third in the 100 in 10.89 seconds and Bryce Pratl finish sixth in the 300 hurdles.

Corunna’s Braden Hartsuff was fourth in the 110 hurdles, while Alma had Thomas Larson place fifth in the 1,600 and Ezekiel Baltierra take seventh in the event.

DIVISION 4

Fowler finished fourth in the girls standings with 37 points to lead area teams at the state finals at Hudsonville. Kalamazoo Hackett won with 44 points.

Nadia Schafer led the Eagles and was the runner-up in the pole vault. Maia Wieber and Leah Thelen each had all-state finishes in the hurdles for Fowler. Wieber placed fifth in the 100 hurdles and seventh in the 300 hurdles. Thelen was third in the 300 hurdles and seventh in the 100 hurdles.

Maple Valley’s Melanie Jones placed fourth in the 400 and Portland St. Patrick’s Katrina Chen was eighth in the discus.

Morrice’s Oliver Long was the state champion in the shot put and had a winning throw of 61-0 1/2. The state title was the third straight in the shot put for Long, who finished unbeaten in the event this season. Long was also third in the discus.

Webberville also had a state champion with Matthew Howery winning the long jump with a personal-best leap of 22-9. Daxten Feguer was tied for second in the high jump for Webberville. Potterville’s Keegan Bennett was sixth in the discus and Maple Valley’s Kelvin Davis was seventh in the 300.
